Disaster Preparedness:  The Salvation Army Offers Hurricane Safety Tips

For a Hurricane Watch

• Listen to local radio or TV for information.
• Prepare to board up windows.  Install already-made shutter panels.
• Bring loose objects indoors (trash cans, toys, lawn furniture, etc.)
• Assemble a Disaster Supply Kit
• Recheck manufactured home tie-downs.
• Keep a list of emergency phone numbers handy.
• Make sure vehicles have plenty of gasoline.
• Identify places to go if told to evacuate.
• Mark a road map with two alternative routes.
• If told to evacuate, do so immediately.

For a Hurricane Warning

• Keep disaster supply kit on hand.
• Stay indoors and away from windows.
• Be aware of the eye of the hurricane.  The most severe part of the storm
  comes just after the eye is present.

Disaster Supply Kit

• Disaster Supply Kit: Emergency Phone Numbers, maps, important documents
• Cash or travelers checks
• At least 3 Gallons of Water
• Canned food opener (non-electric)
• First Aid Supplies
• Medications
• Battery powered radio and flashlight, new batteries
• Protective clothing and rainwear
• Bedding, sleeping bags
• special items for infants, elderly and people with disabilities
• Written instructions on how to turn off utilities
• Non perishable food items for at least three days

Do not travel to the disaster site on your own, without being deployed by a local Salvation Army Volunteer Coordinator. There is limited food, water and lodging in the area, and we cannot guarantee that we will have any of those provisions for you. Do contact your local Salvation Army corps office or fill
