At the time of this writing, our Truck Pick Up Service is not available. We apologize for any inconvenience and pledge that when you drop off your donation, we will be there to help you unload in our state-of-the-art circle drive on Cherry Avenue.
You can make a difference, you can become a volunteer
Individuals and teams are URGENTLY needed to join the Family Store Volunteer Program to assist the Family Store staff in a variety of tasks. Especially needed are people to sort clothing, hang them on hangers and provide quality customer service. We also need a da
ta entry specialist working at our headquarters location. Training will be provided. Our Cherry Avenue store hours are Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Please refer to the volunteer tab of this website for further information and instructions.
We do accept vehicles
Donated vehicles are sold at auction with proceeds going directly to support the local programs of The Salvation Army. Drive the vehicle to our Family Store; bring valid title and your keys. We will receipt the donation and send you a letter for your tax records, once the vehicle is sold at auction. For immediate assistance, call (434) 979-5230.
The thrift store provides used furniture, adult and children’s clothing and shoes, appliances, records, tapes, books, videos, golf equipment, artwork, toys, kitchen utensils, lamps, televisions, knick-knacks and many other items. All of these items are available to the public at reasonable prices. Revenue from its thrift stores funds the missions and programs of the Charlottesville Salvation Army. The stores also assist people who are going through difficult times due to homelessness, domestic violence, or other trying circumstances through the provision of gifts-in-kind. A needy person or family may apply for help though the Emergency Services Office at The Salvation Army’s main office to obtain vouchers for furniture and clothing at no charge.
Our Family Store accepts donations of a wide variety of clothing, furniture, electronic equipment, and household items for resale to the public at reasonable prices. Please call (434) 979-5230 to arrange for pick up and for more information.
Family Stores & Donation Centers
The Salvation Army Family Store supports our many outreach programs by turning reusable goods into much needed funding. Proceeds generated at the Family Store are invested into the many outreach programs managed by the Social Services Department. Shopping at or donating goods to one of our Family Store locations is not only helpful to you, but enables The Salvation Army to serve more individuals in need.
“Sometimes, donors get angry when we won’t accept certain items – what they don’t realize is we have strict rules to follow,” store staff members say. “Breaking these rules can result in costly fines or lawsuits. Most importantly, these rules protect our shoppers. Safety is our number one priority.”
Here are some of the most common items we must turn away:
- Mattress & Box Springs
- Large appliances such as refrigerator, stoves, dishwasher, washers & dryers
- Chandlers that need to be hard wired
- Baby cribs, bassinets, cradles of any kind
- Car Seats and booster seats
“Unfortunately, if that couch is covered in pet hair, we cannot accept it,” store staff members agree. “It’s hard saying no, but rules are rules.”
Another reason donations are turned away: If a store accepts an item but is not allowed to sell it, the store must pay to dispose of it.
“This costs our stores money that could otherwise be used to help people,” the staff adds. “These scenarios are especially troublesome when, for example, someone comes to a store after-hours and leaves an old large-screen TV on our doorstep.”
