Frequently Asked Questions

Please refer to these frequently asked questions first, then call our office at 434-295-4058. Helping you find a solution for your need is important to us and is best done by telephone rather than by an internet inquiry. Using “Contact Us” here does NOT hold a place for you for assistance that is based on timely applications like Angel Tree or Dominion EnergyShare. The best method to contact us is by telephone or by coming into the office.

*****VOLUNTEERS NEEDED*******

1.  How often may I receive assistance (Dominion EnergyShare, vouchers for the Family Store)?
  • BACK TO SCHOOL SUPPLIES We accept donations of school supplies. The supplies are then given to area schools, as assigned, and the school counselor works with teachers to be sure every student has the supplies they need while supplies last. We do not distribute school supplies from our Social Services office.
  • Vouchers from other organizations are not valid at our Family Store without having gone through our Social Services caseworker before going to the store. A voucher from another organization is not a guarantee of assistance but will be considered according to these guidelines and the resources we have been given from the community to support the need.
  • Dominion EnergyShare is available on a first-come-first-served basis to assist energy customers who are facing disconnections, as long as funds are available, and when certain criteria are met. Using “contact us” or sending an email will NOT reserve funds for you.
  • Family Store vouchers for furniture and clothing are issued for emergencies. Emergencies include, but are not limited to fire (bring a fire report), assistance after a disaster (FEMA or document showing address affected and date of need matching a natural disaster), all Active military families are assisted when their resources have grown thin to the extent resources are available.
  • We serve hot meals 365 days a year to the general public. We place food “rescued” from local retailers as a member of the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank outside our soup kitchen every day. Including fresh produce when in season, this “self-serve” pantry is available as supplies last.
  • Please call our office at 434-295-4058 or come by our office at 207 Ridge Street in Charlottesville. We serve the City of Charlottesville, Albemarle County, and the counties of Buckingham, Fluvanna, Greene, and Nelson.

2. Do you have any programs for kids during the year? Yes. We are going FIVE TO EIGHT, 5-8 PM with Youth Night on Tuesdays and music instruction on Thursdays during the school year. The students, any age, start with supper at 5 pm (doing homework, theory lessons or brass instrument warm ups while waiting for all to arrive), then break into groups for badges on Tuesdays, brass band rehearsal, timbrels, and vocal rehearsals on Thursdays until 8 PM. See OUR EVENTS for activities and dates. See https://salvationarmypotomac.org/charlottesvilleva/forms for the permission/waiver form.

3.  How may I volunteer at The Salvation Army? There are many ways to consider volunteering with us:

  • Community Events like the Shoe Drive, Easter Sunday, Harvest Festival, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day are free and open to the public. The public, and their dependents accompanied at all times, is invited to help (examples: serving, clearing, cleaning, sorting) and enjoy the events of the day with others in the community. Volunteers will sign in on these days (in our soup kitchen or gym, generally) and receive assignments. No application or pre-registration is required; however, volunteering at public events does not qualify one for other volunteer opportunities.
  • Our buildings: examples may include clerical, janitorial, inventory and storage.
  • Our Family Store: A flexible schedule for tasks including sorting public donations.
  • Our Soup Kitchen: We serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day, 365 days per year. Tasks include dining room clearing and cleaning, serving, and refilling service tables.
  • During the HOLIDAYS, Bellringers are needed from Black Friday through December 24. Even one four-hour shift is extremely helpful to our mission and our bottom line! Holiday volunteers may email charlottesvilleva@uss.salvationarmy.org for more information. No application is required to ring bells. Signup is done through a signup.com web page which is made live in mid-November of each year.

4. Where may I take my donations of clothing, household items and furniture? Charlottesville has one of the finest Family Stores in the area located at 604 Cherry Avenue (22902). We can arrange for pick up of many larger items. Please call (434) 979-5230 to speak to one of our Family Store specialists for more information. Items are then sold at our Family Store to help support the ongoing services provided through The Salvation Army located at 207 Ridge Street in Charlottesville.

5. What programs do you have for Veterans? A military veteran is Any person who served for Any length of time in Any military service branch. Our services are designed to offer HOPE for veterans themselves through our CORPS PROGRAMS, to help them bring hope to others through VOLUNTEERING, provide FOOD to hungry veterans (see #2 above), and SHELTER to homeless veterans. All veterans families with children age 12 or under are eligible for Angel Tree.

Older adults are particularly vulnerable when it comes to hunger (good nutrition) and loneliness. We try to combat those issues by offering assistance (see #2 above), meaningful Corps PROGRAMS, and VOLUNTEER opportunities.
