You can make a difference to ensure local students go back to school prepared to succeed. All backpacks and supplies are new, so students receive the best. Your $15 donation will provide supplies for one student, and you can impact the lives of additional children with a higher donation level.  As you consider your gift level, be encouraged that a Norfolk family has committed to match all donations up to $5,000.

How this makes an impact: When you sponsor two students for $30, our generous donor will give $30 to purchase two more backpacks!

All donations will support children within the local Hampton Roads community.

Supplies will be distributed to students in need in late August 2022.

For over twenty years, The Salvation Army Hampton Roads Area Command, with the help of our community partners and donors, has worked to ensure that children in Hampton Roads start the new school year with the “Write Stuff”. The Write Stuff Backpack Distribution is a two-day drive-thru style event taking place at The Salvation Kroc Center in Norfolk. Backpacks will be distributed to parents of local students in grades kindergarten through 12th living in Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and parts of Chesapeake. Households living in Portsmouth and Chesapeake zip codes 23321/23323 were asked to contact our Portsmouth office for assistance in those areas.

All clients in attendance must stay in their vehicle and have all required documentation ready for verification.

Reasonable accommodations will be available for those on foot. Clients must follow all posted traffic instructions upon arrival.

During day 2 of the 2021 Write Stuff Backpack Distribution, we checked in with The Salvation Army Hampton Roads Area Commander, Major Dohmann, to get his take on the two-day event and share the impact that it has on the communities in Hampton Roads.
