Lynchburg, VA (March 18, 2021) – The Salvation Army of Greater Lynchburg will be hosting a drive-thru food distribution on Wednesday, March 24th from 9am to 12pm (while supplies last). The event will be held in the parking lot of The Salvation Army at 2211 Park Avenue Lynchburg, VA. While the event will primarily be drive-thru, walk-ups are welcome beginning at 11am. “More and more families are experiencing food insecurity due to financial strain from the COVID-19 pandemic,” stated Major Caleb Prieto. “We want to provide a safe way to meet this need for those in our community.”

The Lynchburg Salvation Army will be providing families and individuals with food bags that include non-perishable food items such as canned goods, pasta, and cereal. There are no ID or income requirements, but data regarding number of individuals in the household will be collected. Vehicles will be directed to turn onto Stuart Street off of Park Avenue, and enter The Salvation Army parking lot from Stuart Street.

The Salvation Army of Greater Lynchburg Thankful for Community Support Throughout 2020 Christmas Season

Lynchburg, VA (February 10, 2021) – The Salvation Army of Greater Lynchburg finished 2020 with its annual Red Kettle Campaign, which raised a total of $112,992.45. This total is around $42,000 short of the previous year’s Red Kettle Campaign. “We anticipated a shortfall in funds raised this year due to the effects of COVID-19,” stated Major Caleb Prieto. “Yet, we are extremely thankful for the way in which our community stepped up to support those who are hurting a little extra after this past year.”

In addition to the Red Kettle Campaign, The Lynchburg Salvation Army also continued its traditional Angel Tree program, which provides Christmas gifts to children in need throughout the Greater Lynchburg community. Again, through the support of the community, the program was able to serve a total of 1358 individuals through the provision of toys, clothing, and gift cards, the majority of which were donated by the community.

“As we go into 2021 the need in our community continues to grow,” stated Major Caleb Prieto. “Our  community has always rallied around those in need, and we trust that the Lord will continue to provide the necessary resources moving forward to serve those in need throughout 2021.”

“Dollars for Diapers” Event at Schewels Home will stock The Salvation Army of Greater Lynchburg with Much-Needed Diapers and Infant Care Items

(Lynchburg, VA) On January 21, 2021, Schewels Home kicked off their annual mattress sale that will benefit The Salvation Army of Greater Lynchburg. A portion of every mattress sold during their “Dollars for Diapers Mattress Savings Event” will generate funds for diapers and other infant care items to be distributed by The Salvation Army. Schewels Home is a family-owned furniture store with 50 locations across Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina. The event will run through April 30, 2021.

After discovering statistics on the challenges families in need have around diapers and infant care items, Schewels Home Co-Owner Jack Schewel stated, “I was disheartened to learn that families receiving assistance through government-sponsored food programs are not able to use those funds to purchase diapers. Without money to buy an adequate supply of diapers, parents and caregivers may leave infants in soiled diapers, increasing health risks and limiting their access to childcare programs,” said Jack Schewel. “The Salvation Army supports families in so many ways, and Schewels Home wants to support families through this program to provide the local Salvation Army with diapers and infant care items to ease families’ burdens and ensure their infants are safe and healthy.”

Throughout the year, Salvation Army helps families and individuals with food, rental, shelter and utility assistance in the Greater Lynchburg area. “Having an increased supply of diapers and infant care items will be a blessing to those with young children,” said Major Caleb Prieto with The Salvation Army of Greater Lynchburg. “If you had to choose between feeding your family or buying diapers, could you choose? Something as simple as a fresh and clean bottom can help babies and their families rise to the top.”

Salvation Army Center of Hope on Lockdown due to COVID, Abundance of Caution and Concern for Community Puts Temporary Hold on Feeding and Family Service Programs

Lynchburg, VA (Fri. Nov., 20) – Officials with the Lynchburg Health Department and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have confirmed that an individual at The Salvation Army of Lynchburg Center of Hope Shelter has tested positive for COVID19. The individual is currently in isolation and under the care and observation of health officials.

The Center of Hope was immediately put on lock-down with continued screenings taking place for all residents and staff onsite. The Salvation Army takes all matters of health seriously and is fully cooperating with Public Health Officials, including the CDC.

Out of an abundance of caution, The Center of Hope, the community feeding program and all family services will be temporarily put on hold for 14 days beginning today, Fri., Nov. 20. This will also impact the Thanksgiving Community Meal planned for Thurs. Nov. 26, which will be postponed until a later date.

Angel Tree and Red Kettle Programs are not impacted and will continue with no interruptions as those programs are administered out of a separate location.

The Salvation Army of Greater Lynchburg continues to be committed to its mission of serving the homeless, hungry and those in need. Salvation Army leadership is working closely with community leaders and partners to address concerns that impact Greater Lynchburg’s homeless populations, as well as volunteers and staff of The Salvation Army. Beginning on 03/17/2020 at 12pm, The Salvation Army of Greater Lynchburg has made changes in its procedures for The Center of Hope that will ensure its mission is being completed while being considerate of local, state and national guidelines regarding COVID 19.

Beginning 03/17/2020 at noon, the following will be implemented:

  • Anyone needing assistance with utilities or rent will need to make an appointment in advance. Individuals will need to bring all required paperwork in printed form. We will not be able to access it from personal cell phones or other personal electronic devices. Individuals can go to SalvationArmyLynchburg.org for a listing of paperwork needed to apply for assistance. To schedule an appointment, please call 434-845-5939.
  • Changes have been put in place regarding community feeding. Breakfast and dinners will be provided in to-go packaging for non-residents and the general community to take off location. Individuals in our resident program at the Center of Hope will continue to be served in our dining room abiding by suggested social distancing guidelines.
  • Increased cleaning schedules have been added to already stringent and comprehensive cleaning procedures for all buildings at The Salvation Army of Greater Lynchburg.
  • Screening procedures are in place to help ensure no one running a fever or exhibiting symptoms of COVID 19 enters the facilities

Currently, the Lynchburg Salvation Army needs individually wrapped breakfast items such as breakfast bars, danishes and individual juices. Food items such as #10 can size vegetables, canned meats, and non-perishable food items are also needed. The Salvation Army of Lynchburg in Critical Need of Volunteer Bell Ringers

The Salvation Army of Greater Lynchburg has a critical need for volunteer bell ringers between now and December 24. The Red Kettle Campaign comprises approximately 20 percent of the overall budget needed to operate the shelter, community feeding program and social services. “Close to 70 percent of the budget needed to meet the needs of the homeless and hungry in our community come in during the holiday season,” stated Capt. Trey Jones. “If we don’t have volunteers to ring at a location, then we miss an opportunity to raise funds that are essential to delivering programs to those in need year-round.”

Currently, the Lynchburg Salvation Army needs to fill 1,200 volunteer hours between now and Dec. 24. In addition to having fewer volunteers this year to ring, The Salvation Army is also experiencing a shorter fund-raising season. “We have agreements at several stores to start ringing the day after Thanksgiving,” stated Capt. Jones. “Because of where Thanksgiving fell this year, we have five fewer days to ring than we did last year, which makes it critical that each location is covered by a volunteer through Christmas Eve.”

Funds raised from the Red Kettle Campaign and through general donations in 2018 provided more than 12,000 nights of shelter to the homeless, more than 31,000 meals for the hungry and helped more than 3,000 individuals with emergency utilities and rent needs. “If you can spare a couple of hours this season to help, you will bring a blessing to those less fortunate throughout the coming year,” stated Capt. Jones.

The Salvation Army Celebrates 40 Years of Angel Tree…Angel Tree Started at River Ridge Mall in 1979

November 11, 2019 – The Salvation Army of Greater Lynchburg will kick off the 2019 Angel Tree program with an Angel Tree 40th Anniversary Weekend this Friday, November 15 and Saturday, November 16.

The public is invited to a free concert on Friday, November 15 at 7:30 PM at The Center for Music and Worship Arts Concert Hall. Hosted by the Liberty University School of Music and School of Nursing, the concert features The Salvation Army National Capital Band. The band has been the Salvation Army’s principal musical force in the District of Columbia and the Commonwealth of Virginia since 1925. Composed entirely of volunteer musicians, the band has developed an international reputation of excellence.

On Saturday, November 16 at 6:00 PM, The Salvation Army National Capital Band returns to the River Ridge Mall for a 40th Anniversary Angel Tree Celebration with music, cookie decorating, tree lighting, and more.

The Angel Tree Program, along with The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign, is one of The Salvation Army’s highest-profile Christmas efforts. Thousands of children across Virginia will experience the joy of opening presents on Christmas morning thanks to generous donors and the help of The Salvation Army Angel Tree Program that started 40 years ago in Lynchburg by Salvation Army officers Lt. Cols. Charles and Shirley White.

“The Angel Tree program provides toys and clothing to children, seniors, and families experiencing financial hardship,” said Captain Trey Jones with The Salvation Army of Greater Lynchburg. “Angels are available for adoption by community members and businesses, who in a small way will deliver the magic and message of Christmas to those in need.”

Decorated with paper angels representing the wishes of local children or seniors in need, Angel Trees are located at River Ridge Mall and area businesses. “We are grateful for the generous support from our community and local businesses that work alongside The Salvation Army to provide a joyous Christmas to those in need,” said Captain Jones.

The Salvation Army of Greater Lynchburg Receives Gift from Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation

The Salvation Army of Greater Lynchburg has received $1,750 from the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation just in time to help feed local residents. The Salvation Army of Greater Lynchburg will use the gift to support its community feeding program.

“We are so excited to receive this gift. During the summer, we see an increase in the number of children and families using our community feeding program. This gift will provide funds that will be used to purchase food items to help meet this need,” stated Lieutenant Kathy Paladino.

The Salvation Army of Greater Lynchburg provided more than 32,000 meals last fiscal year through its community feeding program at its shelter, the Center of Hope. The program provides breakfast and dinner 365 days a year to residents of the shelter as well as those in need in the Greater Lynchburg Community. The program is funded 100 percent by donations from individuals, businesses, organizations and charitable foundations.

Established in 2001, the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation provides financial support for programs and organizations dedicated to feeding the hungry in the communities it serves. Since its inception, the foundation has awarded more than $10 million in grants.

Lynchburg, VA (November 13, 2017) – The Salvation Army of Greater Lynchburg has kicked off the 2017 Red Kettle Campaign with a plea for volunteers. The Red Kettle Campaign comprises on average 20 percent of The Salvation Army’s total budget. Last year, The Salvation Army provided more than 32,000 hot meals, 12,000 nights of lodging, and financial assistance to more than 6,000 people. In addition, more than 18,000 gifts were given to children and the elderly through numerous community programs provided by the Lynchburg Salvation Army.

“We are asking as people make their plans for the holiday season, they also include time to volunteer as a bell ringer,” stated Captain Trey Jones. “We are blessed to serve in one of the most generous communities in the country whose residents have a heart for helping others. Ringing a bell at a Red Kettle is a long-standing tradition in The Salvation Army, one we would love for the community to make part of their own this season.”

Due to closings and adjustments in individual store policies, The Salvation Army has lost several key bell ringing locations that brought in more than $20,000 last year. Having volunteer bell ringers instead of paid ringers ensures that funds raised in the Red Kettle can be applied directly to local program needs. Families and individuals of all ages are welcomed to ring with most choosing to ring in two-hour time slots, but time can be adjusted to accommodate groups and larger families.

Lynchburg, VA (September 28, 2017) – The Salvation Army of Greater Lynchburg will begin taking applications for Angel Tree gift assistance beginning Mon., Oct. 2. Individuals can apply in person at The Salvation Army Corps Community Center located at 2215 Park Avenue. Sign-ups will take place the first two weeks of Oct., Mon. through Fri., 9 am -12 pm and 1 pm -3 pm daily. The Angel Tree Program for the Salvation Army began in Lynchburg, VA in 1979 and has since expanded into an international movement providing gifts to children whose families are financially struggling during the Christmas season. Last year, more than 4,000 needy children and elderly living in the communities of Lynchburg, Bedford, Amherst, Appomattox, Campbell and Nelson County received new gifts and clothing as a result of this program
