In early March 2020, The Salvation Army prepared for the impending outbreak of COVID-19 in the United States.
Salvation Army Corps throughout Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia ramped up efforts to mitigate the spread of the virus, especially among the homeless and other vulnerable populations, while assessing and meeting community needs:
Feeding individuals and families, through food pantries or prepared meals, became a top priority across the Potomac Division.
Our Corps parking lots have become “drive through” operations, allowing us to serve the community safely and efficiently.
Corps officers, staff, and volunteers stocked food pantry shelves through donations and collaborations with local authorities and organizations.
We are grateful for local restaurants and church and service groups who have stepped in to prepare and serve hot or ready-to-heat meals.
In our residential facilities, close living conditions mean infectious disease can easily spread among residents. Additional cleaning throughout the day, with elevated focus on high-traffic areas, and sanitation supplies are part of every location’s infectious-disease protocol.
In this report, we want to share what has taken place in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia this last year during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Salvation Army provided emotional and spiritual care to more than 836,000 people from March through September 2020. The Salvation Army has provided relief in the wake of every natural disaster in the U.S. since 1900. But few events in our history have had as widespread an impact as COVID-19. With the massive loss of lives, as well as the illnesses, unemployment, and shutdowns, the emotional and spiritual toll has been staggering.
In addition to meeting the physical needs of our neighbors, we continued to provide for their emotional and spiritual needs. Thanks to our supporters, we handed out strength as well as meals. We offered comfort as well as beds. In the first few months, we helped thousands of people on our Hope Hotline. We reached out to the elderly and shut-ins who needed the warmth of a caring heart. And we found new ways to shine a light in the darkness, showing the way forward.
Our partners continued the fight for good with more than $25 million in support. During the first few months of the coronavirus crisis, a community of partner organizations, foundations, and individuals across the nation blessed us with more than $25 million of support. Thanks to their help, we have provided food, shelter, and hope to millions of Americans.
We urgently need your help. A donation now, of any amount, will help those struggling to deal with the effects of COVID-19 in your local community. Please give generously and help our neighbors.
