CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WBOY) — The Contractors Association of West Virginia (CAWV) has taken part of its training program and turned it into something beneficial for the community, building bikes for kids.

The event was part of the CAWV’s Construction Leadership Program which requires 12 training sessions over the course of six months.

On Thursday, members of the CAWV gathered at Wolfe’s Excavating in Clarksburg and were put into groups. Each group was given a starting number of bike parts and had to answer training-based questions as well as race on smaller “Big Wheel” bikes in order to earn the next part of the larger full-size bike that they were building.

The original goal was to put together 25 bikes, but the association was able to raise enough money to build 60. All of the bikes were donated to the Clarksburg Salvation Army and the Genesis Youth Crisis Center, both of which plan on distributing them to local children in need.

“We take for granted riding a bike, so I think that’s going to be a great opportunity for kids to be outside. We try to do it at this time of the year so that they can enjoy the spring,” CAWV’s Director of Member Services Sheely Hartley said.

Representatives with the Salvation Army were in attendance to meet some of the kids that this event will benefit as well as to help find others in need.
