Salvation Army Launching ‘Shield Against Hunger’ Food Drive

WHEELING – Food banks across the region are experiencing increased strains on their pantries as the need for food assistance continues to rise. To help meet this need, The Salvation Army in Ohio, Marshall, Wetzel and Tyler Counties is partnering with Ohio County Schools, Marshall County Schools, and WTRF-TV to launch the Shield Against Hunger food drive that will run from March 11-22.

Students and community supporters will be able to drop off nonperishable food items to any school, K-12, in either county as well as at the Salvation Army administration offices at 140 16th St. in Wheeling. The food gathered during this year’s Shield Against Hunger food drive will help to feed not only those seeking food assistance but also those participating in youth and senior programming at The Salvation Army.

Commander Lt. John Lawrence said this food drive is pivotal to the Salvation Army’s ability to meet the need for food gaps in the community.

“This is our biggest food drive of the year. We’ve seen a sharp increase in the number of requests for food over the past year, particularly for items that are non-perishable,” he said. “We’re hoping that the food donated to our Shield Against Hunger campaign will be able to stock our shelves well into fall. We believe that partnering with our local school systems is the best way to make sure this is a success because they are closest to the need.”

Shelby Haines, superintendent of Marshall County Schools, said their partnership is a natural fit.

“Marshall County Schools recognizes the significance of the programs and services provided by the Salvation Army to our students and community. We’re looking forward to working together on this project,” she said.

Likewise, Karen Butyn, director of public relations and marketing for Ohio County Schools, said that partnering with the Salvation Army is a natural extension of their mission to both their students and the community.

“Ohio County Schools is always excited for an opportunity where we can take an active role in giving back to the community. Teaming up with the Salvation Army for this drive means we can continue supporting the families, students, and community we care about so much,” she said.
