For individuals and families in need of shelter from the bitter cold expected this weekend, the City of Lynchburg’s warming center is open two nights: starting Friday at 7 p.m. through Saturday at 8 a.m.; and from Saturday at 4 p.m. through Sunday at 8 a.m.
Lynchburg has partnered with the Salvation Army to open the overnight warming center at 2215 Park Ave. Volunteers with Miriam’s House will be assisting, and the Salvation Army dining area will be open during the day to those in need.
A wintery mix of snow, sleet and rain is expected to begin Saturday morning, the city said in a release. Lynchburg’s Department of Public Works is prepared to respond beginning at 4 a.m. Saturday with spreader operations conducted as needed until temperatures climb above freezing.
Motorists are asked to avoid travel if at all possible during the weather event and to use extra caution if travel becomes necessary, the city said. Call 911 in case of an emergency.
